DATE/TIME:
August 9, 2018
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

662 Encinitas Blvd #228
Encinitas, CA 92024

  • Overview of attachment literature as it pertains to twin development
  • Outline of challenging parenting dilemmas and corrective interventions
  • Summary of developmental hurdles unique to twins
  • Recognition of particular ways in which treating a twin in therapy differs from treating a singleton patient.

Dr. Joan A. Friedman is a psychoanalytically trained psychotherapist who has devoted many years of her professional career to educating twins and their families about twins’ emotional needs. Having worked through her own twinship challenges and parented her fraternal twin sons, she is a definitive expert on twin development.

She is the author of Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children and The Same but Different: How Twins Can Live, Love, and Learn to Be Individuals. Her latest book, Twins in Session: Case Histories in Treating Twinship Issues, will be published in June 2018. It is a book written for psychotherapists and educators who require specialized knowledge and insight about twin psychology to be effective professionals. She has spoken to and consulted with culturally diverse groups of twins around the world. Dr. Friedman’s work focuses on issues that adult twins confront as they adjust to life as singletons after having been raised as twins.

TRANSGENDER AND GENDER NON-CONFORMING YOUTH: HOW TO PROVIDE GENDER AFFIRMING SUPPORT TO YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES
Presented by Huong Diep, PSY.D.

What a great talk last Friday, March 9th from Dr. Diep on providing gender affirming support, which needs to start with the family.  As the child may be struggling with their identity so will the parents.  Dr. Diep takes a family holistic approach to walking the child as well as the parents through this process.  As the parents are still the "gatekeeper" to the child's transition or block to transition.  Dr. Diep shared the video, How to Be a Girl, which was so heart felt.  It was from a mother about her baby boy who identifies as a girl - a must see.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

It is the mission of the Children and Adolescents Committee to interface with the community at large, organizations, agencies and mental health professionals, all of whom work with the children and adolescents of San Diego.  Through collaboration and networking, we strive to promote awareness and to educate and empower those in the San Diego community who work with children and families; including parents, teachers, other school personnel, coaches, and a variety of mental health professionals.  Ultimately, the Committee aims to help San Diego children and youth achieve their true educational, social and emotional potential.

The Committee's primary goal is to provide SDPA members with current, practical, and clinically-relevant information and materials on issues pertaining to the treatment of children, adolescents, and families.  One way this is accomplished is through our Continuing Education events.  Additionally, we promote SDPA within the San Diego community by providing useful information to the general public.  We have made positive connections with other organizations and agencies in San Diego .  In addition, we have joined forces with the Public Education and Media Committee to promote the “Youth Violence Prevention - Warning Signs" education outreach program.
