Client suicide is unfortunately something that approximately 50% of therapists will experience in their career. For many therapists, this event is fraught with worry and an intense mix of negative feelings. Yet, rarely is how to prepare for the aftermath of a client suicide discussed. The complexity of suicide and suicide loss leave many clinicians feeling under-educated and ill-prepared. Few trainings and resources are available to help prepare for important, time-sensitive decisions and actions which may be required to aid the client’s family and to protect the therapist and their other clients. Clinical, ethical, forensic and legal factors intertwine to make these decisions complex, so worth thinking through in the context of a case example.
The goal of this course is to raise awareness of suicide risk factors, using a case example and to prepare clinicians for the aftermath of a client suicide, by discussing clinical, supervisory, forensic, personal, ethical and legal dimensions.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Describe practical, clinical, ethical and legal guidelines for family postvention after a client’s suicide
- Describe common therapist emotional reactions to a client suicide and name several options for how to handle them effectively
- Describe at least three resources which might be helpful to a therapist after a client suicide
- Describe the benefits of a legal consultation, forensic case consultation, a post-suicide case conference, personal therapy and supervisory support for the therapist’s professional recovery after client suicide
There is no cost of attendance. You will order off the menu and pay for your own meal. Dr. Levak and Dr. Borlenghi will provide wine to be served with the meal.
