Coastal Continuing Education is excited to announce "Working with Transgender and Gender Diverse Clients" continuing education course (3 CEs available). Participate in this engaging and interactive 3 hour course from the comfort of your own home. All Licensed Mental Health Professionals will earn 3 continuing education credits.
Course Description:
Join Dr. Shannon Franklin as she presents an introductory course on supporting Transgender and Gender Diverse Clients in mental health settings. This interactive training will aid clinicians in illuminating their own beliefs, biases, and understanding of the trans community. In addition, participants will learn how to implement gender-confirming therapy techniques and interventions. Dr. Franklin will be leading this training through an experiential approach, creating a safe atmosphere for clinicians to ask questions, actively participate in reflection, and engage in case consultation.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe different terms related to gender including but not limited to gender identity, gender expression, transgender, non-binary, gender diverse, etc
2. Apply understanding regarding the importance of correct use pronouns and increase comfortable using correct pronouns.
3. Identify common microaggressions experienced by trans and gender diverse folks and increase insight around personal assumptions and biases.
4. Identity therapy missteps with TGNC clients and how to correct these missteps.
5. Apply gender-affirming clinical techniques to help reduce gender dysphoria and overall distress.
6. Summarize best practices when working with TGNC clients.
Coastal Continuing Education is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for Psychologists. Coastal Continuing Education maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The BBS recognizes CPA CE credit for MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs.

Dr. Franklin is a licensed psychologist specializing in college-age mental health, LGBTQ+ concerns, and gender identity. Dr. Franklin has worked with undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of contexts including the counseling centers at California State University, Northridge and San Bernardino, the University of California San Diego and currently as a staff psychologist at the University of San Diego and Hillcrest Psychological Associates. This has given her a breadth of experience in treating various mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, family concerns, sexuality, academic/career concerns, substance use, and identity development issues.
Dr. Franklin is deeply committed to serving historically marginalized communities and has extensive experience providing mental health services to marginalized populations including ethnic minorities, the LGBTQ population. Dr. Franklin specializes in working with those who identify as transgender and/or gender non-conforming. She believes a person’s identities has a profound impact on the way they interpret and experience the world. Dr. Franklin has found that the exploration of social structures, power dynamics, and how these issues relate to and influence relationships can be very beneficial in therapy work.
Dr. Franklin is the co-founder of the Solve for X (SFX) Mutual Aid group. SFX aims to serve Queer, Trans, People of Color who have been impacted by COVID-19. SFX focuses of provided resources, emotional support, community support, and financial support to Queer, Trans, People of Color. In particular, SFX focuses on supporting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folks who are Queer and Trans as well as disabled, undocumented, elderly and single parents. Since its conception on March 22, 2020 SFX has raised over $8,000 and provided funds to over 70 people.
