September 12, 2020 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Via Zoom
SDPA MEMBERS ONLY
REGISTRATION CLOSES 9/10/20
What: Experience what racial inequality and inequity means in America through your personal reading and viewing experience. The Cultural Diversity Committee's goal is for less intellectualized rhetoric, and more connection with the lived and emotional experience. Once the connection is made, we are all prepared to have an appropriate discussion on views regarding the Racial Pandemic. After you explore the materials below in your personal space, please join us for an in-depth discussion.
Who: SDPA Membership ONLY! This is an opportunity for our membership to experience and have voice on these informative works alongside the Cultural Diversity Committee.
Requirements to Participate: The Cultural Diversity Committee is asking the SDPA members who participate in this zoom discussion to read a short pdf and watch a documentary prior to the meeting:
• THE WILLIE LYNCH LETTER AND THE MAKING OF A SLAVE (pdf available free online) • THIRTEENTH (documentary available on Netflix)
The two pieces to be discussed were carefully chosen by the Cultural Diversity Committee because of their eye-opening depiction of the historical roots of Slavery in America and its continued influence. The Willie Lynch Letter and The Making of a Slave is a short pamphlet available in pdf on-line that describes the brutal and inhumane psychology behind the African slave trade from the materialistic viewpoint of the plantation owners. The documentary Thirteenth, available on Netflix, clearly traces the current mass incarceration of African Americans and materialistic goals to the systemic racism imbedded in the U.S. legal system from the time of slavery.
