About
JUNETEENTH
Calling all Poets…… with your Poems of Freedom!!
Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, observed annually on June 19. In 1863! During the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for all living in the Confederate states. More than two years would pass before the news reached Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. Since that day, Juneteenth has been celebrated!
